DURHAM – Duke Athletics announced Monday its plan to update the playing surface at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The Blue Devils will install artificial grass in the color of Duke Blue beginning in May. The project is estimated to take two months to complete and will debut Friday, Aug. 30, when the Blue Devils welcome Elon for their season opener.
The stadium, which opened in 1929, was the first athletics facility on Duke’s West Campus. Originally Duke Stadium, it was renamed in 1967 for former Blue Devil head coach Wallace Wade with Brooks Field being dedicated in 2015 after alumnus Steve Brooks and his wife, Eileen.
The venue has undergone just one other renovation in its history, a three-phase plan, which started after the completion of the 2014 season and concluded prior to the 2017 season. During the previous renovation, the playing surface was lowered seven feet, the surrounding track was removed, and an LED videoboard was installed. In addition, Duke added the Blue Devil Tower, which is a 97,160-square-foot facility that has club and suite seating as well as a press box.
